Increasing your chances of grabbing a cam that fits, the Camalot's double-axle design allows retraction of larger cam lobes, giving these cams a much larger expansion range than single-axle units. Because loading forces are shared between both axles, this design has the strength to work as a full-strength cam stop, letting you use the cam as passive pro and adding security if the unit walks back into a wider part of a crack and umbrellas. This is the third generation of BD Camalots and they just keep getting better. The cable loop trigger is easy to grab, and the slings are large enough to manipulate with gloves. Black Diamond calls their Camalot C4 line the "Gold Standard for camming units". As far as I can tell, it has earned the title. They are light weight, versatile, and strong.

The double-axle design of the C4 gives it some important qualities. First, it increases effective expansion range of the cam, which means a single cam can fit in more places. Second, it allows the cam to be used as passive protection where the cam lobes are fully extended (provided it is placed correctly). This second feature may not be used often, but the option is nice to have. Single axle cams, including the C3, cannot be used this way.

This cam can be set in vertical or horizontal placements. The flexible stem allows it to bend over the edge of a horizontal crack.

This is quality gear. Take care of your C4's, and they will last for years.

As with any piece of rock climbing gear, learn how to properly use and maintain this equipment. Improper cam placement (flaring cracks, chockstones, thin flakes, etc) contributes to many avoidable injuries and deaths every year. Climbing gear is only as good as the climber.

This fits in like everything that you could stick your hand in. It is so much more versatile than Metolious cams and it is awesome and super smooth. I already have one and had to by another becuase it is so nice and so smooth and so easy to use.
